Growing crossandra from seeds

Crossandra

Crossaders do not often resort to this method of reproduction, since it is not often possible to find high-quality seeds. If luck smiled at you and you acquired seed material for guaranteed seedlings, the seeds must be soaked in water for 7-9 hours before sowing to increase germination and accelerate germination. Water for this is used at room temperature. After soaking, the seeds are dried to facilitate sowing.

For sowing seeds, it is necessary to prepare a nutrient mixture by mixing in equal proportions:

  • peat ;
  • coarse river sand.

The prepared mixture is kept for 20 minutes in a microwave oven to kill pathogenic microbes and insect larvae.

After processing, the soil mixture is moistened, the seeds are sown in shallow grooves and sprinkled with a thin layer of calcined sand. The container is covered with polyethylene and placed in a well-lit place with a temperature of 23-25 degrees.

Polyethylene is removed daily for a short period of time to ventilate the seedlings and moisten the soil as needed. Condensation that has collected on the surface of the polyethylene must be removed.

The first shoots will appear in 14-21 days. After germination, the polyethylene is removed.

seedling care

Crossandra

In order for seedlings to develop normally, they need to create comfortable conditions for growth:

  1. In summer, the temperature in the room should not exceed +28 degrees. Throughout the year, the plant will be comfortable at a temperature of +18 degrees. In winter, the temperature should not fall below +13 degrees.
  2. Humidity in the room should be at least 52%.
  3. Watering should be moderate. For irrigation, use water at room temperature that has been settled for a week. Carry out watering in the period from November to August 3-4 times in seven days. The frequency of watering is explained by the fact that during this period of time the plant begins an active period of increasing the green mass of flowering. In September and October, the plant is at rest, so the frequency of watering is gradually reduced. At first, the plant is watered twice a week, and then watering is reduced to 1 time in 10 days. Too much moisture in the soil can lead to root rot. The plant responds well to spraying. When carrying out this procedure, it is important to ensure that water does not fall on the flowers.
  4. The most successful location for the flower will be the windowsill of a window located on the east or west side of the house. If the flower pot is installed on the windowsill on the south side, then the plant must be shaded from direct sunlight, since burns remain when they hit the delicate leaves of the crossandra.
  5. The room in which the crossander grows must be regularly ventilated. However, it should be borne in mind that the plant does not tolerate drafts.
  6. After each watering, it is necessary to carefully loosen the soil to avoid stagnant moisture and the formation of a crust on the soil surface, which prevents the penetration of oxygen to the roots of the plant.
  7. The plant should be fed every 15 days. For these purposes, a universal liquid fertilizer is suitable. Frequent top dressing is carried out only at the stage of active growth. In the future, top dressing is not often applied, since the plant is very sensitive to excess salts in the soil. In winter, feeding is stopped.
  8. If the plant has two true leaves, it is recommended to plant it in separate containers. The transplant is carried out with a clod of earth, so as not to damage the root system that has not yet strengthened. In the future, the plant is transplanted by transshipment every two years. The soil in the pot must be replaced with fresh. The drainage layer must be at least 2 cm.
  9. Every two years it is necessary to carry out pruning to preserve the decorative appearance of the plant. Pruning is done in the spring. Overgrown side shoots are removed to stimulate flowering. Elongated shoots are shortened by 1/3.
  10. Once a week, the leaves of the plant must be wiped with a damp cloth.

Propagation of crossandra by cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is carried out in the spring. When pruning the plants, cut shoots 8-10 cm long are selected. On the shoots, the lower leaves are removed, and the upper ones are shortened by half. The cuttings in the places of the lower cut are treated with the Kornevin growth stimulator, after which the rooting procedure is performed.

Rooting can be done in three ways:

Method 1: rooting the cutting in the soil mixture

The treated cuttings are buried at an angle with a soil mixture consisting of equal parts of peat and coarse river sand. The soil mixture must be moist. Several cuttings can be planted in one container. To create a greenhouse effect, the container is covered with a cut plastic bottle or cap. During the rooting period, the soil should always be moist. The lid is removed daily for a short while for ventilation. Cuttings are recommended to be periodically irrigated with water. The rooting process lasts from three weeks to a month.

Method 2: rooting in water

On the prepared cuttings, the lower leaves are removed, placed in a container with water and left until the roots appear. Water needs to be changed daily. When the roots grow to a length of 25 mm, the cutting is planted in nutrient soil.

Method 3: Rooting in peat tablets “Jiffo”

cuttings

The tablets are placed in a container, poured with water at room temperature and left for 15 minutes until completely swollen. The water is lightly squeezed out, the remaining water is removed from the container. A recess is made in the center of the tablet, into which a cutting treated with Kornevin’s solution is planted. A tablet with a stem is placed in a cut bottle and covered with its second part on top. Containers with cuttings are installed in a warm place with good lighting. The rooting process takes a month.

Types and varieties of crossandra

In nature, there are more than fifty species of crossandra, but flower growers use only a few of them for cultivation. The most common varieties are:

Crossandra funnelform

This variety is a semi-shrub that grows up to 95 cm in nature. When grown in room conditions, the height of the bush is 55-60 cm.

The stems are straight, the leaves are oblong, pointed at the top with wavy edges up to 12 cm long. The flowers are tubular, five-petal. Bract of large size, deep green. Flower diameter – 25 mm. The flowers are orange-pink in color with a yellow center, collected in inflorescences in the form of an ear. Peduncle length up to 10 cm.

Crossandra Tropic

It is the most popular variety of funnel crossandra. The height of the bush is up to 25 cm, and a width of 20 cm. It is grown indoors, and in regions with a warm climate it can be grown in the garden as an annual plant. The color, depending on the variety of the variety, is as follows:

  • Tropic Flame – orange-salmon flower color;
  • Tropic Splash – The petals are dark yellow at the base, the edges of the petals have a lighter shade.
  • Fortuna – the color of the flowers is orange-salmon, the variety has a well-developed root system, resistant to temperature extremes, withstands temperatures as low as 12 degrees.

Crossandra prickly

Crossandra

African species, bush height up to 60 cm. The leaves are oblong, pointed towards the bottom. The lower leaves, located at the base of the stem, are 12 cm long and 25 mm wide. Leaves, located in the upper part, no more than 6 cm long and 15 mm wide. The color of the leaves is rich green with silvery veins. Flowers orange-yellow. The length of the peduncles is 5-10 cm.

Crossandra Nile

This variety is a shrub 55-62 cm high. The leaves are dense, glossy, dark green in color, have the shape of an ellipse with a pointed tip. The flowers are tubular, five-lobed, salmon pink or brick red. Flowers are collected in inflorescences, located at the top of the stem.

Diseases and pests

Crossandra

Pests that harm the crossand are:

  1. Aphid . When this pest appears, a sticky coating appears on the leaves. You can get rid of this problem with a solution of laundry soap, which is used to treat the leaves of the plant. You can also spray with tobacco infusion.
  2. Mealybug. If this problem is detected, the pest is removed from the plant with a cotton swab, then the plant is treated three times with calendula tincture with a break of 7 days.
  3. The spider mite appears on the leaves of the plant in very dry indoor air. When a pest is found, the plant is treated with insecticides.

The most common plant disease is cladosporiosis. The disease manifests itself as brown spots on the leaf plate. If timely measures are not taken to eliminate the problem, the disease will spread to the entire plant. In order to get rid of the disease, you must:

  • remove affected leaves;
  • treat the plant with Fitosparin;
  • control the humidity level.

Growing problems

Crossandra

Often in the process of growing crossandra flower growers face the following problems:

  1. The leaves turn yellow, but remain elastic. This problem is a signal that the plant lacks nutrients. Feeding is required.
  2. Withering and falling leaves indicates a lack of moisture, or a sharp temperature drop.
  3. The lack of flowering indicates a lack of light. Additional lighting needs to be provided.

Subject to all the care recommendations, flower growers will be able to easily grow a tropical beauty in their apartment and enjoy its magnificent flowering.
