An interesting trend in recent years has been the use of various fences for beds and flower beds on personal plots. Neat borders protect garden paths from soil pollution and serve as a picturesque element of landscape decor. They are made of wood, natural stone, brick or plastic. Alternative materials include plastic utensils, bottles, tires, cans, and household utensils.
Garden borders perform many useful functions:
- they facilitate the care of sowing;
- inhibit the growth of weeds and prevent the growth of flower beds;
- prevent flushing and creeping of the soil;
- provide more rational watering;
- serve as reliable protection against harmful rodents and insects.
Fences are classified according to three main features:
- Installation method (removable and stationary);
- Manufacturing material.
For zoning the territory, decorative fences up to 7 cm high are chosen. If the flowerbed is arranged on a hill, functional borders made of concrete and stone up to 10 cm high should be preferred.
Lightweight removable structures are installed for the period of existence of the beds, stationary ones are placed in places where flower beds are permanently arranged. They are made from frost-resistant materials, since such fences will have to survive the off-season.
The main types of borders
Many owners make fences for beds with their own hands. Brick, willow twigs or vines, wooden planks and logs, edged boards or natural stone are used as auxiliary material.
The most common fencing option, which does not require much maintenance and is easy to install. It is resistant to temperature extremes, is not afraid of exposure to open sunlight and moisture. Usually it is a low fence, consisting of separate sections. Such structures have a different shape and color, which makes it possible to be creative in developing the design of the site.
Curb tape is intended for fencing low plants. It is buried in the ground, thereby preventing the growth of roots. Due to the elasticity of the material, the tape can take any shape.
Wrought iron fences
Metal fences are used not only for flower beds, but also for large front gardens. These structures are durable, but subject to corrosion and decay; can be dangerous due to their sharp edges.
Reinforced concrete curbs, which are installed to protect stationary beds, are more resistant to temperature extremes.
Wooden fence made of pegs or stumps
The traditional type of fencing includes wooden fences, which can vary in color and height. Beautiful and inexpensive environmentally friendly designs have only two drawbacks – fragility and poor resistance to external influences.
A picket fence made of slats is installed on the surface of the earth. It can be made collapsible and cleaned in the offseason. Using strips of different lengths or different methods of connecting boards, you can give the fence various original shapes.
From logs and beams get a palisade. The bottom of the blanks must be pointed so that they can be hammered deep into the ground. This creates a barrier for the root systems of plants.
Edged board is used to create various shapes of flower beds. Pyramidal compositions of three or more tiers are very popular.
Brick beds are characterized by a wide variety of types and shapes. For the design of low beds use one layer of brick. It can be installed vertically, horizontally or at an angle. If it is necessary to enclose a high flower bed, the brick is laid in several layers. For raised beds, a solid wall is installed without a gap.

Fencing made of alternative materials
Fences for flower beds, as well as borders for garden paths, can be made from the most unexpected materials. Craftsmen use plastic utensils, bottles, tires, cans, DVDs and vinyl records for these purposes.
