Cranberry – a healing berry
The health benefits of cranberries are well known. As a family doctor, she saves us in the treatment of gastric diseases, helps to lower blood pressure, cranberries with honey are taken for atherosclerosis and to strengthen the walls of blood vessels, cranberry drinks are useful for colds and in the postoperative period. Astronauts, divers and Chernobyl survivors take cranberries as medicine.
That is why we go every autumn in search of cranberries to marshy places, jump over bumps, collect medicinal berries or buy at the market.
But there are gardeners who grow large-fruited garden cranberries in their dachas, planting and caring for it is not difficult. It grows well, blooms and pleases by autumn with sour healthy berries.
Cranberries are perfectly preserved, do not suffer from transportation, they can be harvested both in the fall, before the snow, and in the spring – these qualities distinguish it favorably from other berry crops.
Choosing a cranberry variety, preparing a site for planting
Breeders have developed cranberry varieties adapted to our conditions. Scarlet reserved, with large spherical fruits. The beauty of the North has even larger fruits, oval in shape. The Sazonovskaya cranberries have round-oval fruits with an angular slightly ribbed surface, large, violet-red, and the Severyanka has a dark red berry. The fruits of large-fruited cranberries are juicy, sweet and sour, these varieties ripen in the first decade of September.
If you decide to grow cranberries in the country, then you need to prepare a well-lit place for it, free it from the roots of all plants and then weed them out in a timely manner. Remove the topsoil on20 cm, mix with peat (for 2 buckets of earth, 1 bucket of peat). At the bottom, instead of drainage, lay the film. Lay the soil, gradually watering, to a height of 20-25 cm, and on top of 2 cmunsifted sand. Sand has a good effect on the temperature of the plant, and does not allow peat to collapse.
The site must be carefully leveled so that there are no pits in which water can stagnate. Cranberries do not like excess moisture.
Planting material for growing cranberries is best purchased in a nursery. These will be whip shoots up to1 meter… During transportation, the lashes dry up, so they must be soaked in clean water for two hours. Then cut off the top, and cut the rest of the shoot into cuttings 9-10 cm…
Reproduction and planting of seedlings
Reproduction of cranberries most often occurs by cuttings, although it is known to obtain seedlings from seeds. Propagation by cuttings allows you to obtain a large amount of planting material with the characteristics of the parent plant, while growing from seeds does not guarantee the preservation of the parental characteristics. Plant from mid to late May, row spacing at least20 cm, and in a row – 10-15 cm… Plant 2 cuttings in one seat. Thus, on1 sq. myou need 60 cuttings. For planting, you need to prepare a flat stick with a length of about 15-20 cm, make a small notch at one end to make it easier to deepen the cutting into the substrate. The stalk should be put on the sand and in the middle, with the deepening of the stick, press it into the sand, so that no more than2 cmfrom each end. Thus, one end of the cutting will be deepened top down, and the other – bottom up.
For all other crops, when cuttings are cut, the lower part of the cut is deepened into the substrate.
When planting, the sand should be sufficiently moist, but not wet, and remain so until new shoots begin to form on the cuttings. The first 2-3 weeks should be watered 2 times a week, and after the growth of shoots, once is enough. To speed up rooting and the formation of additional roots, cuttings can be pressed into the substrate obliquely, from south to north. The emergence of new shoots also means the emergence of new roots. Rooting occurs in 20-25 days.
Cranberry plantation care
But back to our garden. After planting, everything must be carefully, carefully leveled and covered with foil. Keep the film until lashes are formed, after 1520 cmpin with a stick, do not let them go outside the site, but wrap them up. New roots will form at the pinning site, and the lashes will go in both directions. And soon your entire plantation will close, everything will intertwine and fruiting will begin. Then the lashes will rise up and bear fruit in the second tier. The first crop of cranberries grows for 2-3 years. Half a bucket of cranberries can be harvested from one square meter.
Cranberry is a beautiful evergreen plant. It can be planted as a curb on either side of a garden path.
If the initial shoots of cranberries develop poorly, you can make fertilizing with organic fertilizers (weak solution) or mineral (dry). After the beginning of fruiting, fertilizers do not need to be applied.
If the crop is small, then you need to make several dressings in May, June, August – with superphosphate.
For the first year, lightly cover non-fertile plants with spruce branches for the winter. No need to shelter in subsequent years.
Cranberries can be affected by hydroniasis, which can damage the leaves and soften the berries. In this case, a month before ripening, treat with a 1% solution of copper sulfate.
