Harvest formula: variety and agricultural technology. I have been growing garden strawberries or Victoria for 25 years. For the last ten years, I have been receiving consistently high yields of this very tasty and healthy berry.
Agricultural technology for growing strawberries
Immediately I will make a reservation that the planting scheme can be different, it does not have a big effect on the harvest, you can plant a plantation with a distance between the bushes of 20 cm, and in a row of 15 cm (in a checkerboard pattern), it is possible on wide ridges according to the 20×20 cm pattern, you can narrow ridges of Mittlider, in this matter the choice is yours, but I ask you to follow the rest of my advice completely if you want to please your family and people close to you every year with a full-fledged harvest of this valuable garden culture.
The most crucial period in Victoria’s life is when fruiting ends (usually the end of July). At this moment, the laying of fruit buds of the next year’s harvest begins, and all the attention of gardeners at this moment should be directed to strawberries.
Firstly, it is necessary to remove the old stalks and part of the leaves, I am not a supporter of complete mowing of leaves, because in our region there are very early cold weather, and before winter Victoria should leave well leafy, so I leave young leaves in the center of the bush, and I cut off the rest with scissors, leaving a petiole of about 2 cm. I loosen the earth between the bushes and in a row.
Secondly, you must feed the strawberries well: you can use full mineral fertilizer, you can use slurry infusion (1:10) plus a full set of trace elements.
Thirdly, if the weather is dry, you should do a salvo watering 2-3 times, about 5 buckets of water under each bush in order to wet the ground well.
Fourthly, if there were signs of any diseases on your plantations of this culture (various rot, leaf spot, etc.), then it is necessary to spray the plants and the ground around them with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid, this can also be done for prevention diseases.
All this you must do as soon as possible, 2-3 weeks after fruiting, that is, until mid-August.
Then, until the fall, you just have to keep your plantation clean of weeds and cut off the mustache.
In the spring, as soon as the snow melts, it is necessary to clear the bushes of old leaves. There is an opinion among the people that there is no need to rush with this, that, supposedly, early treated bushes bloom earlier and fall under frost. I was convinced of the opposite, and, on the contrary, I believe that every day of delay in doing this work gives a big loss of strawberry yield, since the stalks, like the leaves, grow, and the later you will carry out this work, the more the stalks will suffer, because during this period they are very fragile and easily break off, but the flowering time depends solely on the variety. For several years in a row, I carried out spring processing at different times, flowering occurred at the same time, so I am convinced of the correctness of my observations.
After the old leaves are removed, I loosen the ground and process it with onion peel infusion with soap and ash from pests.
It is not necessary to carry out spring fertilizing with fertilizers, since the plants begin to rage, and this fertilizing does not affect the crop in any way, it has already formed in you in the fall.
Garden strawberry varieties
Now a little about the varieties. During the entire period of growing Victoria, I have tried many varieties. The most fruitful in our conditions is still the Festivalnaya variety .
From the early ones: Zarya, Beauty of Zagorya, but with late frosts, shelters are needed, otherwise 50% of the harvest will be lost.
Of the late ones: Zenga-Zengana, Troubadour, Talisman, Redgauntlet, but with the flood rains that we have from the second half of July, 50% of the crop is lost from rot.
FESTIVALNAYA is a mid-season variety, and this is its advantage, it is practically not affected by frosts and manages to give the entire crop before the onset of rainy weather, there are a number of mid-season varieties, such as Moscow Jubilee, Zenith, but their berries are smaller, and the Cardinal variety gives very long peduncles and it is necessary to put supports under them, the berries are very large up to 80 g, dense and without support lie on the ground, before others are affected by rot.
About the propagation of strawberries
I never take random planting material.
When I initially laid the plantation, I bought varietal planting material in nurseries, and then, when I harvest, I draw attention to the outstanding bushes, the most productive with the most beautiful berries, mark them with a red ribbon and after fruiting I leave a mustache on them and help the rosettes to take root.
In spring and only in spring, there can be no autumn plantings in our region, I take rooted rosettes from my chosen bushes and plant a new plantation. OK it’s all over Now. Bountiful harvests for you!
