How to grow orchids from seeds at home

how to grow orchids from seeds at home Blog

The orchid is a fabulous flower that attracts with its exquisite dress and original forms and, unfortunately, disappoints with its capricious growth. Often, you can get a beauty by buying a ready-made composition in a store, but sophisticated flower growers, of course, want to grow capricious exotics themselves. The process is difficult, but possible.

A little about orchids

The homeland of the orchid is tropical forests, although in nature it can also be found in the forest-tundra. It belongs to the family of herbaceous annuals. To date, there are about 35,000 species of flower, orchids are actively crossed by breeders. In nature, the flower has a different color and the ability to cross. The first who wanted to see the exotic in their homes were the Chinese, and the Greeks actively composed legends about the flower. Orchids can grow “on a tree”, flowers use it as a support.

Orchids are divided into 2 characteristic groups: monopodial (growth point – the upper kidney) and sympodial (escape from the peduncle).

The size of the flowers varies in size from 2 centimeters to one meter in diameter. In shape, the flowers resemble a mouthpiece, inflorescences consist of 4-15 buds. Delicate flowers in shape are similar to the silhouettes of ballerinas, lizards, birds, butterflies, shoes.

Orchid

The leaves of the flower have a dark green color of bright color, they are simple in shape. Pseudobulbs are formed on the stems, from which the leaves of the flower grow. Pseudobulbs contain “orchid life” – moisture and nutrients.

Orchid propagation

Common methods of reproduction: division of the rhizome, from the peduncle and seeds. Propagation by seeds is a very painstaking process, requiring almost laboratory conditions. It is almost impossible to grow seeds yourself: pollination, growing boxes in which very vulnerable dusty seeds are not an easy process, therefore it is better to purchase seed material collected by professionals. The following varieties are suitable for home growing from seeds: phalaenopsis, vanda, dendrabium, zygapelum.

What to consider when growing from seed?

  1. Vulnerability of seed material. All manipulations with seed material are carried out under conditions of sterility and urgency.
  2. gel medium. A substrate consisting of seaweed or artificial gels guarantees successful germination. Special formulations can be purchased at flower shops.
  3. Fertilizer. The ideal feed includes glucose or sugar.
  4. Sterility of containers and tools.

Seed material for growing room exotics must have high quality characteristics. Often, seeds can be bought at specialized flower shops or ordered through an online resource. If you decide to order seed material online, be sure to take a look at the reviews of former customers and quality characteristics.

Chinese flower seeds can vary from pollen to larger seeds. Delicate exotic seeds are easily attacked by bacteria or fungi, so the packaging and storage of seeds must be absolutely sterile.

Features of the soil and equipment for growing

In order to ultimately get a good result in small things, you need to be careful. Necessary equipment for germination: glass cones up to 150 mm, gauze texture fabric, tripod. If you don’t have cones, plain baby food jars will do.

The substrate for germinating seeds in flasks: agar-agar, you can also recreate the so-called “Knudson’s environment”, specially created for the flower. To do this, you will need: water (distilled) – 200 ml, calcium nitrate – 1 g / l, ammonium sulfate, agar-agar, sucrose. The agar-agar mixture is brought to swelling with distilled water, then it is sent to a steam bath to a homogeneous state, the resulting neutral medium is diluted with hydrochloric acid, during manipulation it is important to achieve the necessary result – 5.2 pH – an ideal state for flower germination.

Seed sterilization

Immediately before sowing, the seeds are sterilized with chlorine, at the rate of 10 grams per 100 milliliters of water. Before planting, the seed material is placed in the solution for ten minutes. Sterilization can also be carried out using an ultraviolet lamp, 1% potassium permanganate solution, 2% hydrogen peroxide solution.

Sterilization of inventory: before laying the substrate, all involved tools are cleaned with a soda solution and placed in the oven for half an hour for sterilization.

Sowing seeds

To get rid of fungi, the sowing procedure is carried out over steam. To do this, you need a container of boiling water, pre-equipped with a grate. The flasks with soil are placed on a grid.

The next stage, directly sowing the seeds: the seeds are removed from the sterile environment and quickly planted in flasks, then the containers are tightly closed and placed in a temperature regime of 18 to 23 degrees Celsius, the germinating seeds must be provided with a light day of 14 hours.

Seedling care

The first fruits of your efforts appear in the form of greenish grains, this will happen about a week after planting. In the wake of the balls, hairs appear, and then leaves. Transplanting into a pot can be done only after a year. After transplanting into a new soil, the orchid will bloom five years later.

Potted transplant. The extraction of young shoots must be carried out carefully so as not to damage the delicate root system of the flower. After extraction, the orchid roots are washed from the old substrate. Before planting in a permanent habitat, the new soil is soaked in boiling water and left for thirty minutes. The main substrate for an orchid is based on moss, fern roots or pine bark.

Reproduction of an orchid from a peduncle

This will require a ready-made flower, an overgrown stem is cut off from it, and it is cut off above the initial bud. The cut stem is cut into several equal parts, placed in a jar, tightly covered and placed in a bright place. The jar is pre-sterilized and filled with a moss substrate. With high humidity, the germination of the stem will occur much faster.

Growing a flower from a root

To propagate from the root, you will need an adult, well-grown plant. You will also need a sterilized container for this. This method is carried out by dividing the root of the plant. A part of the root is separated from an adult plant, the remaining part is smeared with coal. The separated part is also placed in a pre-sterilized container with moss soil.

Rooted plant care

Orchid

The capriciousness of an orchid implies careful care for it. The orchid loves humidity and sunlight, while the direct rays of the sun are destructive for it. When watering, you can not fill the flower, the earth should remain a little dry. It should be watered with boiled water, while placing the pot in water for ten minutes.

After planting in the main soil, the plant may undergo rot. This can happen due to excessive watering and cold indoor air. The situation can be corrected only at an early stage of the appearance of rot. How to understand that the plant has undergone a fungus? – Brown spots appear on the leaves and stems, mold forms on the soil and an unpleasant odor exudes. What to do?

  1. It is important to remove the plant from the soil as soon as possible and clean the roots well.
  2. Cut off the affected parts of the flower.
  3. Disinfect the roots of the plant in manganese (about 30 minutes).
  4. Prepare a sterile pot and soil .
  5. Plant the orchid in a new pot and add Gliocladin.
  6. Watering plants using solutions of Baikal-M or Alirin-B.

Hard work in growing an orchid can only be rewarded if you carefully follow the growing instructions. Only a sophisticated gardener will decide on such a time-consuming
